Hi. Welcome to Mindwars Ghosted.

I’m Steven Howard, and this is the independent home for my writing—away from Substack and other platforms whose expanding controls, compliance demands and shifting rules increasingly determine what can be published, discovered or discussed.

For much of my life, I accepted the official account of how society worked. Governments existed to serve the public. Corporations delivered progress. The media reported the truth. Institutions invoking “safety,” “protecting children” or “fighting misinformation” were presumed to be acting in good faith.

The pandemic years changed that.

Lockdowns, mandates, censorship, institutional conformity and the abrupt narrowing of legitimate public debate exposed something deeper than a temporary emergency response. Questions that should have been examined were pathologised. Dissent was treated as a behavioural or psychological problem. Institutional authority was repeatedly substituted for evidence.

What had appeared to be an open society looked increasingly like a managed system: one in which governments, corporations, media organisations, professional bodies, foundations, think tanks and technology platforms could align around common narratives, interests and methods of control.

Mindwars Ghosted is where I examine that machinery.

Why “Mindwars Ghosted”?

Mindwars refers to the struggle over thought, language and consent.

It concerns the classification of dissent, the policing of acceptable belief, the use of behavioural science, the manufacture of consensus and the conversion of political disagreement into questions of safety, pathology, expertise or social responsibility.

It asks who gets to define what is reasonable, responsible, informed or dangerous—and what institutional power follows from those definitions.

Ghosted reflects the decision to step outside platforms that increasingly demand submission to their systems: algorithmic suppression, blurred or restricted content, identity and age-verification controls, financial exclusion, arbitrary enforcement and rules that can change without meaningful recourse.

This site is intended to provide a direct relationship between writer and reader.

No algorithm decides whether you see the work. No platform ranking system determines whether it travels. No intermediary is needed beyond the infrastructure required to publish it and deliver it to subscribers.

Mindwars Ghosted publishes long-form work examining the structures, narratives and personnel through which power operates.

Mindwars

The Mindwars series examines the management of belief and dissent.

It looks at academic papers, media narratives, behavioural programmes, psychological frameworks, fact-checking systems and institutional campaigns that define legitimate suspicion as irrationality, extremism, misinformation or conspiracy thinking.

The concern is not simply what these systems say. It is what they do: how classifications become tools of exclusion, surveillance, reputational control and administrative intervention.

Geopolitika

Geopolitika examines institutional and geopolitical power.

It maps organisations, people, funding structures, professional networks, ideological projects and material relationships. It asks how authority is reproduced across governments, corporations, think tanks, foundations, universities, media systems and international institutions.

The focus is on structure and function rather than public presentation: who has access, who selects whom, how ideas become policy, how influence travels, and which interests are protected or advanced.

Operators and Overlords

The Operators and Overlords series examine the people, professional classes and institutional networks that convert broad political or ideological projects into practical systems.

These include policy intellectuals, lawyers, financiers, psychologists, regulators, technocrats, public-health administrators, communications specialists and other intermediaries through whom power is organised and exercised.

Institutional and narrative analysis

The site also publishes profiles of institutions, analyses of reports and policy papers, historical studies, visual mappings and broader essays connecting recurring mechanisms across different fields.

The aim is not to produce isolated commentary on each new controversy. It is to expose the architecture that persists beneath changing events.

The analytical position

Mindwars Ghosted is not institutionally neutral.

It begins from the position that power should be interrogated, not deferred to; that consensus is not proof; that moral language can conceal material interests; and that formal mandates do not necessarily explain how institutions function in practice.

That does not mean every relationship proves coordination, every omission proves concealment, or every institution is controlled by a single centre.

The work aims to distinguish what can be shown from what can only be inferred, what remains plausible and what remains unresolved.

The critical frame is deliberate. So is the obligation to remain answerable to evidence.

Independence

Mindwars Ghosted is independently written and published.

The site is currently free to read, with the intention that it will eventually be supported by subscribers who value the work and want it to continue.

Independence does not mean isolation from criticism. Comments are open, disagreement is welcome and factual corrections should be made where they are warranted.

It means that the direction of the project is not determined by platform incentives, institutional sponsorship or the need to remain acceptable to the systems being examined.

This site is for readers who are tired of “safety” being used as a universal justification for control; who question the authority of institutions to define acceptable thought; and who want to look beneath events at the structures, interests and mechanisms shaping them.

Truth is not protected by suppressing questions.

It is tested by exposing claims to evidence, criticism and open examination.
